Our guides do not fish when guiding. We are there to assist & advise while keeping you safe - to ensure an enjoyable excursion.

OUR WORK

"If you are seriously interested in pursuing the sport of fly fishing, I could not recommend a better person to introduce you to it. First and foremost, Chris’s personality, and ability to relate to people on all levels, makes learning from him a very enjoyable experience. His wealth of knowledge on the equipment, techniques, and most importantly, the biology of the fresh and salt water sportfish he has pursued, are clearly evident."  Rick H.

The Experience

The Annapolis Royal area has a history of sport fishing going back 150 years.  Most of the hotels in the village were very popular with travelling 'sports' who travelled from NYC, Boston and beyond for the exceptional trout & salmon fishing on the Annapolis, Mersey and Medway river systems.  While Atlantic Salmon have not recovered from the damage caused by acid rain our native Brook Trout did. Smallmouth Bass are invasive, but they are here to stay and they are a great sportfish, especially on a fly rod. Striped Bass can be elusive at times so we keep close attention to what they are up to. Check-in with us for a report.

We offer half-day, full-day and multi-day adventures in search of trout, striped bass and smallmouth bass. The waterways of the interior are truly beautiful and it is normal not to see another angler for hours, days or even for weeks at a time.  There is a lot of fishable water out there but its tough to figure out where to start!  We are here to ensure that you have a productive, safe and highly enjoyable fishing adventure.  Come join us,

"An excellent fishing guide. Consummate in his knowledge and passion for the craft. He is dedicated to his clients with a definite conservationist attitude towards our precious Nova Scotia fishery. A high recommendation. Thanks for sharing your experience Chris. Tight lines!"

ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Some of us are born to fish and some us are called to fish. No matter what age you start, the passion for angling is a gift with a myriad of benefits. Wild fish tend to live in unspoiled natural places that offer an immersion in nature that promotes wellbeing and happiness. Though I am not a naturalist, I approach fishing from a naturalist's perspective. We are motivated to have our clients catch fish, however the time spent in wild, wooded, watery places with otters, kingfishers, eagles, and amphibians, is the true reward for a day out. Our goal is not to kill and eat a limit of fish. Conservation is key. We strongly suggest catch and release fishing, especially for our wild Brook (Speckled) Trout.  We suggest only keeping 1 or 2 trout and for Striped Bass releasing the big spawning females over 35"

I have been fly-fishing for over 35 years and fishing for 50 years.  In that time I have taught my own children and many other people of all ages and backgrounds to fly-fish. We particularly enjoy bringing women and children into the sport. Fish have no biases and neither do we.

Chris & Lara

"I had the opportunity to put Chris to the test last fall when myself and a good friend visited Annapolis Royal to fish for Striped Bass for the first time.  Chris didn’t disappoint, he had us on fish in less than an hour the first morning, and I lost count on the number of fish we caught over the six days of our stay.  It was one of the best fishing experiences I have had.

Give Chris a chance to immerse you into this sport…….I guarantee you’ll be “hooked”….no pun intended!"

"This past Autumn I booked a bucket list fishing trip to Nova Scotia with high hopes of getting the opportunity to experience its famous striped bass fishery. The only problem that I was completely out of my element. Being an avid angler from Ontario, who pursued musky and walleye this was entirely new to me.  A friend referred Chris Fertnig at PRSF to me, explaining what a well-seasoned and exceptional guide he was. I placed my faith in Chris and had the best seven days of fishing any man could ask for. Chris not only took the time to explain the striped bass fishery and its fascinating history, he put us on numbers of fish far beyond and expectations, and some of exceptional size. Pound for pound these fish hit harder than a musky and have the power stamina of a fresh salmon. Thank-you Chris for providing a memorable angling experience, and your never ending patience with a novice striper fisherman".  Mark F.

"Where can I even start? Christopher is a calibre of a guide cut above the rest and truly an expert in the art of fly fishing. I'm totally brand new to fly fishing and decided to take his fly fishing course to learn the sport. Within minutes of him teaching me I was able to grasp the basics of casting and after a couple hours of his patient teaching style I began to feel like I was really getting the hang of it.

After that course I booked another session with him later in the week to be guided on some local streams for brook trout and again Christopher was just as great as before. Immediately we were on the fish and into the action, and along the whole way he was sharing his knowledge with me and making sure I wasn't developing bad habits.

Anyone that's looking to get into the sport for the first time or even an expert that's looking to be guided into some beautiful spots loaded with fish there is no one I could think of better than Christopher at Port Royal Sport Fishing. I surely will be back again."
